The project involves laying a fiber-optic subsea cable from the island of Røst in Lofoten to the city of Bodø on the mainland. The deployment was carried out with the M/S Fjordkabel in July 2016, and the cable was laid in two stages across the Vestfjord. The 112-kilometer-long cable consists of a reinforced subsea cable towards Røst and a normally armored subsea cable in the Vestfjord. In the Vestfjord, the cable lies at depths between 220 and 300 meters, before it lies at depths between 150 and 100 meters from the island of Bliksvær to Bodø.
The challenges in the project were the cable landings at Røst. The shallow conditions prevented the entry, and with the M/S Fjordkabel positioned in dynamic positioning (DP), 2000 meters of cable were laid afloat and pulled to shore with a workboat. Assisted by support vessels, the cable was maneuvered into place in the route and prepared by divers on the seabed.
Activities in the project:
- Mobilization of vessels
- Loading of subsea cable
- Landing of the subsea cable at Røst and in Bodø
- Computer-controlled deployment method
- Splicing of the cable at sea
- Securing the cable at the landings
